Best Eastern US Cities for Roamers

So, you're a baby boomer who has decided that the digital nomad/roamer lifestyle is for you. You want to try it out by traveling in and around the US. If the east coast is on your list of destinations, there are a variety of options that offer a mix of affordability, culture, and amenities. Below are some of the best Eastern US cities for baby boomers who are digital nomads and why:

  1. Asheville, North Carolina - Asheville offers a combination of natural beauty, a thriving arts scene, and affordable living. The city is surrounded by the stunning Blue Ridge Mountains, making it a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts. Additionally, Asheville has a vibrant downtown area with numerous art galleries, shops, and restaurants. While in Asheville, you can immerse yourself in the local history and lore (we did a popular ghost tour) or try your hand at a craft studio (we chose glassblowing). The Airbnb we stayed in was one of the best so far on our roaming adventures.

  2. Savannah, Georgia - Savannah is known for its historic charm and Southern hospitality. The city is home to numerous historic buildings, lush parks, and picturesque squares, making it a popular destination for tourists and residents alike. Additionally, Savannah has a growing arts scene, with numerous galleries and performing arts venues.

  3. Charlottesville, Virginia - Charlottesville is located in the heart of Virginia's wine country and offers a mix of natural beauty and cultural amenities. The city is home to the University of Virginia, which brings a youthful energy to the area. Additionally, Charlottesville is surrounded by numerous vineyards and wineries, making it a popular destination for wine lovers.

  4. Portland, Maine - Portland offers a mix of coastal beauty, New England charm, and vibrant cultural offerings. The city is home to numerous art galleries, theaters, and restaurants, as well as a thriving waterfront area. If you're in the area, consider a cruise on one of the historic tall ships. Portland is also known for its delicious seafood and proximity to other popular destinations in Maine, such as Acadia National Park.

  5. Charleston, South Carolina - Charleston is one of our favorite destinations, known for its rich history, stunning architecture, and Southern charm. The city is home to numerous historic buildings, lush parks, and picturesque streets. If you're a foodie, you'll find some of the best restaurants on the east coast right here, including Poogan's Porch, 82 Queen, and Slightly North of Broad (SNOB). And if you're wanting some of the best biscuits in the world, stop by Callie's Hot Little Biscuit on Upper King Street and say hello to our good friend Carrie Morey, biscuit aficionado and host of "How She Rolls" on PBS.

If you are roaming the US, these Eastern cities offer a mix of affordability, culture, and amenities that make them ideal for digital nomads. By choosing the right city, baby boomers can enjoy a fulfilling lifestyle while also staying connected to the digital world.
