ROAMING TOGETHER

We Spent the Night in a Cave

That's right. We spent the night in a cave.

This is Kokopelli’s Cave in New Mexico (kokoscave.us). It’s an actual cave, carved into the side of a sandstone mountain overlooking the La Plata river valley about 300 feet below. It is a comfortable 1700 sq foot apartment with a full bath (including a rock waterfall and hot tub), a full kitchen, and a very cozy bedroom and living area.

When we made the decision to start roaming at the beginning of the year, we decided that we were going to do things and experience things that we’d never done before.

We’ve never spent a night in a cave, so this was an easy decision.

The cave was originally intended to be an office for the owner, Bruce Black, who is a consulting geologist. That plan didn’t materialize, so they decided to make the space into a bed and breakfast.

They took a good idea and turned it into a great idea and a bucket list overnight adventure. Rather than abandon an idea that didn’t work, they capitalized on the uniqueness of the property and shifted – or pivoted – to create Koko’s Cave.

In the course of your entrepreneurial journey, you may come up with a good idea that, for whatever reason, won’t work or won’t produce the results you’re after. You could quit and toss the idea aside, or you could pivot, change your focus, and repurpose the idea into something magical.

Consider who the product or service was intended for and then ask, “Who else could use this or benefit from it?” Rather than marketing and selling to consumers, what about other businesses and vice versa?

Don’t let a good idea go to waste, and don’t allow short-sightedness or closed-mindedness to limit your success.
