You Must Go On An Adventure

“You must go on adventures to find out where you truly belong.” – Sue Fitzmaurice

Adventures are what we live for. We always have.

We’ve been to more than 20 countries and have enjoyed every minute of it. Learning the language, the customs, and meeting the people.

There is no substitute for travel.

And you can’t get the full experience from books. You can’t feel the warmth of the people, the sights and smells of the cooking, the smell of fresh bread and pastries, or the rhythms of music pouring out of the shops and bars.

To truly experience life in other countries, you must get outside of the main cities, away from the tourist areas flush with Mcdonald's, Dunkin Donuts, and Starbucks. Abandon the comfortable surroundings of home and immerse yourself in the daily routines of the locals.

Shop at the local grocery store, butcher shop, fruit stand, or the entrepreneur selling hand-carved wooden bowls on the beach.

Strike up a conversation. Ask questions. Show interest. Where do they go to eat, to celebrate birthdays or anniversaries? What is their favorite local hangout? Which beach do they prefer? What do they recommend you see or experience to give the full familiarity with their country?

Years ago, we went to Rome, Italy, and started wandering the back streets and alleyways exploring shops off the tourist trail. We met two ladies – sisters as it turned out – who owned a small wine and cheese shop. We struck up a conversation (their English was much better than our Italian) and we asked them for a recommendation for a restaurant. Something out of the way, special, known almost exclusively to locals.

They were excited and grateful that we asked for their recommendation and quickly directed us to a small family-owned eatery that was a favorite celebratory restaurant.

It did not disappoint.

The restaurant opened into a cobblestone alleyway. Stanchions and ropes were set out to create an outdoor dining area. Tables were set with white tablecloths and a spray of fresh flowers. We sat and enjoyed one of the best Italian meals of our vacation. During the meal, a car was attempting to drive through the alley. I had to lift my wine glass to allow the car’s side mirror to pass by. It all made for a unique and memorable dining experience.

While writing this article, my wife and I are sitting in Playa Samara in the beautiful country of Costa Rica. To my left, the ocean waves are softly crashing on the beach. In the background, people laughing, children screaming, and a local boys and girls club is conducting a drum class.

Yes, we’re sweating a bit, but we’re lost in the moment, enjoying the experience. And neither of us would change our lives for anything.
